VOLUME I / THE WORK

Why Silence Interests Me

I removed things from The Requiem layer by layer. In the end, the empty space began to do more than anything I had written into it.

OSA I / TEOS

Miksi hiljaisuus kiinnostaa minua

Poistin The Requiemista asioita kerros kerrokselta.

The Requiem did not begin quietly. Its early versions tested a severe narrative. Imagery, violence, sensation and social pornography.

The intention was to make an impact quickly. Perhaps also to make sure that nobody remained indifferent.

The more material there was, the less it left for the guest.

Too much

A powerful image can seem necessary when you have worked with it for too long.

You become used to it. You begin to increase its force. One image requires another. One statement requires a harder statement.

Eventually the work begins to shout in order to prove that it has something to say.

The early versions of The Requiem carried this pressure. The story announced what should be felt. The imagery closed interpretation before it had time to begin. Violence and sensation pulled attention towards themselves.

They were visible.

Too visible.

Layer by layer

We began to remove things.

First something small. Then a scene. Then an image I had thought was essential.

Each removal felt briefly like a loss. I had spent time building these things. They had their own logic. Letting go of them could easily look like weakening the work.

But when one layer disappeared, there was not emptiness underneath.

There was space.

That was different.

The space did not ask the guest to understand less. It gave the guest more to do.

Imagination does its own work

When everything is not shown, a person does not remain passive.

They complete it.

A small sound can create a larger image than a projection. A break can remain longer than an explanation. What is not said begins to gather possibilities around it.

I do not mean that less is always better.

Sometimes an absence is only an absence. If the structure does not hold, a gap does not become meaning. It remains a gap.

But when there is enough precision around it, imagination performs work that we cannot do for the guest.

It also does something we cannot control.

That is both the strength of the work and its risk.

Silence is not obedience

A silent guest is not necessarily present.

They may be thinking about a message, tomorrow or the strangeness of the situation. They may follow everything and resist it at the same time.

I cannot command attention.

I can only try to build somewhere for it to go.

That is why silence cannot become continuous pressure. Attention needs variation. It tightens and releases. It leaves and sometimes returns.

If an evening demands the same intensity for hours, silence becomes another kind of noise.

What interests me is precisely that silence guarantees nothing.

Service becomes visible

Conversation hides a great deal at an ordinary table.

A delay disappears into a sentence. The approach of a server is noticed only when they speak. The time between two events fills itself.

In a quiet room, none of this disappears as easily.

A step becomes visible. A glance becomes visible. Hesitation becomes visible.

This can tempt us to turn service into a performance. A gesture grows larger because it suddenly has room.

I am interested in the opposite direction.

When everything is visible, the movement should become smaller. Service should become more exact, not more demonstrative.

The right moment does not need to be underlined.

Freedom or restriction

Silence is sometimes described as a luxury.

The idea is attractive, but too easy.

Silence can release a guest from the duty to sustain a conversation, fill a pause or show others that they are enjoying themselves. They do not have to turn every feeling immediately into words.

That can feel light.

It can also feel isolating.

Both are true. That is why silence has to be chosen. It should not be given as a surprise whose meaning is revealed only at the table.

A voluntary pause in speech can open space.

Enforced silence closes it.

What remains unsaid

The Requiem does not claim that the world would be better without conversation.

Silence is a temporary structure. It begins and it ends.

Afterwards, speech returns.

Perhaps guests compare what they noticed. Perhaps they describe the moment when their attention left. Perhaps they speak about something else entirely.

I cannot decide that for them.

That is why I removed so much.

When the work says less, I do not know exactly what will appear in its place.

That is uncomfortable.

It is also why silence interests me.

Conversation returns.

But perhaps it does not return exactly as it was.

The Requiem ei alkanut hiljaisena.

Siihen tottuu. Sen tehoa alkaa kasvattaa. Yhden kuvan jälkeen tarvitaan toinen. Yhden väitteen jälkeen kovempi väite.

Lopulta työ alkaa huutaa todistaakseen, että sillä on jotakin sanottavaa.

The Requiemin ensimmäisissä versioissa oli tätä painetta.

Huomio tarvitsee vaihtelua. Se kiristyy ja hellittää. Se lähtee ja joskus palaa.

Jos ilta vaatii samaa intensiteettiä tuntikausia, hiljaisuudesta tulee melua.

Minua kiinnostaa hiljaisuudessa juuri se, ettei se takaa mitään.

Palvelu tulee näkyviin

Tavallisessa pöydässä keskustelu peittää paljon.

Viivästys katoaa lauseeseen. Tarjoilijan lähestyminen huomataan vasta, kun hän puhuu. Kahden tapahtuman välinen aika täyttyy itsestään.

Hiljaisessa tilassa mikään näistä ei katoa yhtä helposti.

Askel näkyy. Katse näkyy. Epäröinti näkyy.

Tämä voi houkutella tekemään palvelusta esityksen. Elettä suurennetaan, koska sille on yhtäkkiä tilaa.

Hiljaisuus on väliaikainen rakenne. Se alkaa ja päättyy.

Sen jälkeen puhe palaa.

Ehkä vieraat vertaavat sitä, mitä he huomasivat. Ehkä he kertovat hetkestä, jossa huomio katosi. Ehkä he puhuvat aivan muusta.

Keskustelu palaa.

Mutta ehkä se ei palaa aivan samana.
